The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) continues to align the curriculum in Vocational High School (SMK) with the needs of the business world and industry (DU / DI) as part of the main agenda of SMK Revitalization. Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy expects more and more vocational schools to utilize the teaching factory to train students to work properly with professional production of goods / services according to DU / DI standards.

"Teaching factory, will produce products or services that meet industry standards, then it can be sold and become part of the school's income as well.At least, children learn to produce according to standards and manage a production unit," said Mendikbud in the opening of technical assistance Teaching Factory organized by Directorate of Vocational Development, in Kudus, Central Java, Thursday (28/06/2018).

The most important requirement is that the prospective recipient vocational school already has the potential of teaching factory. "For example, SMK already has a laboratory or workshop, but still not feasible, then assistance can be used to improve to fit industry standards," explained Director of Vocational Education.

Kemendikbud Encourage State-owned SMKs to Become BLUDs

And SMK with BLUD status must have close partnership with industry or service. "The curriculum can be determined with companies that are invited as partners, up to 60 percent," he said.

During this time, according to Mendikbud, quite a lot of SMK with a teaching factory that is quite advanced to operate like an industry. In order for income earned from the sales of factory teaching production is not categorized as a deviation of financial management it is necessary to encourage SMK with teaching factory to BULD.

"Hopefully this year the ministerial regulation on the formation of BLUD for the state vocational school has been completed," said Muhadjir.

With the management of SMK by the provincial government, Mendikbud hopes that the soon issued ministerial regulations related to the formation of BLUD can be followed up with governor regulation. Believed Mendikbud, teaching factory teaching process can encourage the productivity of both students, teachers, and schools as a whole because competing each other to deliver their respective products / services.

Strengthening Character Through Teaching Factory

Teaching Factory is a bridging program between schools with industrial or business world that have similarities in the field of skills. So the program will educate students of SMK in order to be able to produce goods or services like a company.

Director of Vocational Education revealed that teaching factory plays an important role for character education of vocational students. Learning in the teaching factory is meant to train students not only skillfully and competently, but also to have a mental attitude and character that suits the needs of the industry. Learning through the teaching factory, is believed to be able to develop work ethic as well as the character of discipline, responsibility, honest, cooperation, and leadership of learners; which is needed by business world and industrial world.

Vocational learning through teaching factories is also considered to improve the quality of learning outcomes, rather than equip competencies (based on competency-based training) to learning that provides the ability to produce goods / services (production-based training).

"Many industries only want to get the workforce that suits their needs, but do not want to invest. So, this teaching factory program can be a bridge to link and match between school and industry, "explained M.Bakrun.
